A 21-year-old New Lenox-area man was sentenced to prison Tuesday after pleading guilty to possession of child pornography in 2009 and breaking into a neighbor’s home in 2011.

Will County Sheriff’s Police Spokesman Kathy Hoffmeyer said Judge Amy M. Bertani-Tomczak sentenced Alex J. Shingler of the 300 block of Carol Road to three years in prison after he admitted to having images of underage children involved in explicit activity on Internet-access devices at his home.

Hoffmeyer said the images had been downloaded from a file-sharing Web site, and from trades Shingler made via an Internet chat room catering to persons interested in child pornography.

Sheriff’s Police obtained a search warrant to check the devices in October 2009 after learning Wheaton Police had turned up Shingler’s Internet-access identification during an undercover child-pornography investigation.

While free on bail, Shingler entered a neighboring home while the occupants slept, taking four laptop computers, in May 2011. He later helped the victims recover two of the computers, Hoffmeyer said.

Hoffmeyer said Bertani-Tomczak sentenced Shingler to four years in prison on that charge, but Hoffmeyer said she didn’t know if the two sentences were to be served concurrently or consecutively.
