SUMMARY:Book of Psalms begins School of Prayer series Sept. 13 at St. Thomas the Apostle
DESCRIPTION;CHARSET=UTF-8:The successful School of Prayer series at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church will begin its second season with “Psalms: Life as Prayer,” from 7:30 – 9 p.m. Monday, Sept. 13. Led by Chari Rosales, director of S.T.A.F.F.S. (St. Thomas Adult Faith Formation & Spirituality), the session will meet at the church, 1500 Brookdale Road, Naperville. “The Book of Psalms often has been referred to as the Bible’s ‘school of prayer,’” said Rosales, “so it holds a wealth of knowledge for us to explore.” She added, “We will look at selected Psalms as through a prism, letting their facets display, in traditional language and modern paraphrase, in song, art and story, a reflection of all the ‘ups’ and ‘downs’ of life … glad, mad and sad.” Rosales, an engaging speaker who enlivens her subject matter with clarity and vivacity, has been active in church ministry for three decades, especially in the areas of Scripture study, liturgy and religious history. “This first presentation about praying with Psalms introduces another series of prayer topics in which we will continue to sample the mixture of riches found in the Christian treasury of prayer,” continued Rosales. “Once again, we will experience prayer forms ranging from the ancient to the contemporary, all with the goal of expanding and deepening spirituality.” According to Rosales, the genesis for the School of Prayer came from the apostles’ request, “Lord, teach us to pray,” while the strategy for the series’ development was fashioned after the Girl Scouts whose organization has “try it’s.” During “try it’s” in the School of Prayer, participants will have the opportunity to experience various ways of praying. Rosales noted that “there are many ways to God and many ways to connect with God, and last year whetted the appetites of people to learn about those ways more deeply and extensively. So, the series will explore additional prayerful ways to connect with God.” Among last season’s experiences were: praying in and with nature; lectio divina, an old form of prayer that integrates slow, reflective reading with meditation and prayer; the Ignatian spirituality of finding God in all things; and concentrating one’s awareness on the present moment as a place to connect with God. During its second season, the School of Prayer series will meet monthly on Mondays through April 2011 and participants are welcome to attend as many sessions as possible. Each session in the School of Prayer will be led by a different individual, including men and women, ordained and lay people, spiritual directors and those with academic degrees. Sessions in the School of Prayer for the remainder of 2010 include: poet Jane Barnes on poetry in and as prayer, Oct. 11; and spiritual director Joann Hassler on how to create blessings, Nov. 8. After a holiday break, the School of Prayer series will resume in January 2011.
