A Kane County jury has found a 38-year-old Elgin man guilty of sexually assaulting a young girl under the age of 13, according to the county State’s Attorney’s Office.
Sergio Varela, of the 800 block of Morgan Street, was convicted of two counts of predatory criminal sexual assault and one count of aggravated criminal sexual abuse in connection with incidents that occurred between 2014 and 2017, the report said.
Varela knew the victim and knew she was younger than 13, prosecutors said.
Varela’s $10,000 bond was revoked upon conviction and he is being held in the Kane County jail. His next court appearance is scheduled for Jan. 12.
When sentenced, he faces a prison term of between six and 74 years and will be required to register for life as a sexual offender.
“I am grateful to this victim for her courage to face her abuser in court,” Asistant State’s Attorney Stacey Wittman said in a statement. “My thanks to a second victim for testifying about her abuse with this defendant as well.”
