Naperville may stiffen the punishment to businesses that sell synthetic forms of illegal drugs.
The city’s Liquor and Tobacco Control Commission on Thursday agreed businesses that have a liquor or tobacco license should be barred from selling or distributing the fake drugs. Under the proposed ordinance changes, violators could risk fines and suspension or revocation of their license.
Assistant City Attorney Mike DiSanto told the commission the synthetic drugs aren’t composed of the exact same chemical compounds as drugs like cannabis and cocaine but mimic their effects. The state recently made it a felony to possess or sell the synthetic drugs.
DiSanto said there have been reports of people in Naperville in possession of synthetics, but he is not aware of any liquor or tobacco licensees currently selling them.
The city also is looking at raising its license fee for cigarette and tobacco dealers to $150, up from $50 this year and to $200 next year and may do away with tobacco vending machines.
The changes could go before the City Council in March.
