Video: In wake of stabbing, North Central students say they feel safe

In the wake of the weekend stabbing that took the life of Shaun Wild, a 2010 graduate of North Central College, students say they feel safe in Naperville and on campus.

William Hayes, a current senior at North Central, was also stabbed in the bar fight on Saturday at Frankies Blue Room. The incident was the second stabbing in downtown in less than a year involving a student. Last March, a North Central football player working at BlackFinn American Saloon was stabbed.

Students said Monday night this was a simple case of being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

“This certainly is no crime zone,” said Emily Canaday, a freshman from North Carolina. “It’s a cute little college.”

Most admitted that in any situation where alcohol is involved, small events can escalate and get violent.

But Stephanie Brunetti, a sophomore from Lake in the Hills, said North Central students aren’t known to be partiers or particularly active in the bar scene.

Melissa Zambrano, a sophomore from East Hazel Crest, and Sam Buckman, a freshman from Munster, Ind., both called the event unfortunate, but they feel it doesn’t threaten their safety in town.
