A suburban man is in fair condition after firefighters worked to rescue him from a sand silo at a Naperville business Monday.

William Ortiz, a 37-year-old supervisor with Dukane Precast in Naperville, was extracted from a 30-foot sand silo and transferred to Edward Hospital at 3:20 p.m. Monday. He was in fair condition Monday afternoon, according to Edward Hospital spokesman Keith Hartenberger.

Naperville Fire Department Deputy Chief Rick Sander said a call came in that a man was in the half-filled silo around 11:30 a.m. at the business, in the 1800 block of High Grove Road, that manufactures building materials. Dukane Precast uses sand to make concrete.

Ortiz was on a catwalk before he entered the silo, said Dukane spokeswoman Lissa Christman.

The Naperville Fire Department, along with technical rescue companies from Homer Township, Addison, Oak Brook and Bloomingdale, responded. They worked for several hours to remove Ortiz, described as an experienced employee who has worked at the company since 2004.

β€œIt’s a slow process – a very meticulous and thought-out process,” Sander said while the rescue was underway.
