Famed Billy Goat Tavern coming to Mt. Prospect

An iconic Chicago restaurant will soon establish an outpost in Mount Prospect’s Randhurst Village, formerly Randhurst Mall.

It’s a long way, culturally and in miles, from the Billy Goat Tavern’s subterranean location steps off Lower Michigan Avenue in Chicago.

Legendary regulars there included the late journalist Mike Royko and famed comedian John Belushi, who was a customer during his Second City days.

According to the tavern’s website, another customer, Don Novello, wrote the famous Saturday Night Live skit “cheezborger, cheezborger,” which has become the tavern’s signature line.

The Randhurst location is the chain’s ninth branch, joining several Chicago locations as well as outposts in Washington D.C. and in Zion. A tenth location is planned for Aurora.

Bill Sianis, grandnephew of William “Billy Goat” Sianis, who founded the tavern in 1934, said he hopes the Randhurst location will be open by late July.

The most famous legend linked to the tavern may be the so-called Cubs Curse. As the story goes, the elder Sianis cursed the team in 1945 after his pet goat wasn’t allowed into Game 4 of the 1945 World Series between the Cubs and the Detroit Tigers.

There have been several official efforts by the Sianis family to lift the curse, according to the tavern website “It was a curse, but it was kind of a friendly curse,” Bill Sianis recently told Mount Prospect trustees.

While Billy Goat traditions are strong, things can change.

Sam Sianis, Bill’s father and himself the nephew of the original Billy Goat, said this week that “chips, no fries” rule only applies at the Lower Michigan and Navy Pier locations, with the other outposts offering fries.

Some changes may be in store, but while the Cubs have made it into post-season play several times since the original 1945 curse, they haven’t made it into the World Series since then.
