If you build it, they will come, was the theme for the Morton Grove Farmers' Market Committee while creating the 2011 Winter Market. After months of planning, contacting new and old vendors along with advertising, the day had come. The farmers, crafters and food vendors arrived and began setting up their booths. It smelled like Christmas and looked perfect for a Winter Market, but the question remained, would they come?
That was quickly answered as shoppers walked in the doors hours before opening, by the time the musical groups, Luz Echo and Honky Tonk Parade were playing, the room was filled with people tasting, looking and buying their holiday goodies.
The variety was plenty for each person there to find what they wanted, from hand made wreaths to Alpaca knit sweaters to organic salsa. There was even a luxurious bathtub and shower to check out in the lobby as shoppers entered, thanks to the generous sponsorship of Bath Fitters.
The children had fun making beaded crafts while parents and grandparents enjoyed their day of shopping and relaxing among friends and family. Taking a load off their feet, folks sipped hot cider from Super Cup and bit into the scrumptious Tava chicken and samosas. Of course it wouldn't be complete without a danish from Maiers Bakery and holiday cookies from Le Flour, market vendors from the 2011 season.
At the end of the day, over 500 people ate, drank, and were merry at the Winter Market. Many asked if there would be another market this winter, alas, they will have to wait until Saturday, May 12 for the Spring Market at the new location on Dempster next to Harrer Pool.
During the off season, you can still get food and products from many of them through the market website. Even John Bailey, the Honey Guy, runs a Christmas tree farm now, where you can go and chop down your own tree for the holiday.
The Morton Grove Farmers' Market Committee was thrilled with the entire event! There are more than 20 people who get together and plan the market all year round.
