These fees are a complete rip-off and a great example of how communities are supplementing their revenues without raising taxes. I recently paid over $700 in Riverside to recover my vehicle after my son was involved in a minor issue.
I suggest that everyone do what I did when this happened to me: Next time your local church, community fund, fraternal order of police, Junior Women’s Club or other social agency calls to solicit your annual donation, send them a letter indicating that you’ve been ripped off by the village and don’t have the funds to make a donation. Copy your community’s board of trustees. If enough people do this, the outrageous impoundment fees will eventually be repealed.
