Ed, Your financial gain from the golf course may be a question in your mind. What is not in question is the financial loss to the citizens of Lake County and the Towns of Highland Park, Lake Bluff and Lake Forest. There is an abundance of public courses in the County and there are public courses in each of the municipalities.
Golf playership is down nationwide over the past 15 years and the trend is continuing down. Because of this, all courses are suffering financially. Managers of golf courses across the country agree, the thing that all of them need is fewer courses. You are the proponent of the opposite.
In aggregate, the County courses are losing money. One makes a little profit and losses in the others consume any profits. A new course is projected to break even. However, this is done on the back of the other courses. This means that we add one course that the new one plus the three that now break even will lose money in aggregate. This will be done on the back of the Lake County taxpayers.
Lake Forest, Lake Bluff and Highland Park courses all lose money. The new course would deepen the losses at all.
I hope the County Commissioners are paying attention. They have a legal obligation to protect the interests of ALL of the taxpayers and voters and not just the interests of a few homeowners in a small subdivision in Highland Park.

Ed,
I think that you have exceeded the limits of what is ethical in journalism. You are using your position as a columnist to promote a couse in which you have an undisclosed vested interest. As you personally stand to gain financially (at the expense of all Lake County taxpayers) if this course is built, you need to either disclose this fact in your article or refrain from taking a position.
