Captain Walter Blanchard was a 54-year-old DuPage County judge when Civil War fighting broke out. He organized a company of 90 area men who fought in the 13th Illinois Volunteer Infantry and was elected Captain. He died from wounds received near Chattanooga, Tenn., shortly after fellow Illinoisan Gen. Ulysses S. Grant received command of the Western Army. Gen. William Tecumseh Sherrman was dispatched to assist pinned-down soldiers fighitng near the rail hub of Chattanooga. Five days after Blanchard is supposed to have died, troops there rallied under Sherman, routing the Confederate forces. The war's momentum was starting to shift.
