  1. With the 30,000 riders (extremely optimistic) & $356,655 cost, the average subsidy in taxes for each ride equals $11.89, or $23.78 per round trip (2 rides).

Should we be subsidizing people at the cost of $23.78 per round trip on the Schaumburg Trolley?

The stated motivation of the trolley is to increase retail sales & hotel business. To get $356,655 back into the Village coffers from the 2% in sales tax (Municipal Sales Tax & State share of sales tax) revenue each rider would have to spend $594.43 per each ride, and $1,188.85 for a round trip of 2 rides.

Do we know if the average trolley rider spends $1,188.85 per round trip after riding the trolley? And if they are spending that much money per trip why do they need a $23.78 subsidy from the taxpayers to ride the trolley?

The best thing we can do for Woodfield Mall and the other surrounding businesses is to limit government spending & lower taxes.

  2. RandomReader,

I would love to address your concerns about “inaccuracies and speculation” in this article but you don’t state what is inaccurate or speculation. Can you be more specific?

  3. New TIF District Property Tax Cost: Also to note is the $120 million STAR Line TIF district will cost an average of over $5 million in property taxes per year over the next 23 years. Which is 239% more than what is collected now in property taxes in the Olde Schaumburg Center TIF district.

  4. Schaumburg Does Have Property Tax: …but it just doesn’t levy it directly.

As you can see in the 2008 Schaumburg Treasurer’s Report linked below the Village of Schaumburg collected in the Capital Funds section a TIF Property Tax Increment of $2,172,926

The other taxing bodies such as District 211, District 54, Schaumburg Library, Park District, & Township, along with Cook County levy the property taxes and a percentage is diverted from its stated purpose on the property tax bill into the Various Tax districts including Schaumburg’s Old Schaumburg Center & STAR Line TIF districts.
