I am voting this as the #1 Most Ignored Subject in this topic of children’s involvement in 4H. I’m very certain the children learn every little nuance – How much food, water and space each animal requires. What shots and medication should be administered. How much weight each animal should gain and all the in-between progress as to what their bodies should be “performing” in. I’m sure the children learn how to groom these fine specimens, how to walk and “show” them. How to stand quietly besides “their” animal as the judge evaluates them both.
So if all this is true – That the children see, learn, and participate in each and every tiny attribute of the animal’s life – All for the sake of learning “all about animal agriculture”… Why is it that no one has answered this question as to why the children aren’t able to witness and assist in the most important culmination of all their hard work? The #1 Most Important grand finale to be had in this whole “experience” of course is the moment when that life becomes “food”. Why oh why are these children “spared” this final lesson? If they “know” all about it — What’s the big deal? If they “know” all about it — It seems that it’s only reasonable to assume the act of physically killing and seeing these animals die would be no big deal.
Now, either this 4H lesson is incomplete and in flagrant violation of what they espouse themselves to teach: “every facet of raising animals for food”. OR they are not being truthful about the children “knowing all about the animals being killed”. You see, simple logic says it cannot be both.
Now – Please pray tell dear 4H supporters and meat consumers – Which is it? If the children indeed “know” – why do they not witness? And if they do not “witness” how in the world can they really “know”?

mrtrumbe – Actually there are many “minorities” and people of color who “get” animal rights:
http://vimeo.com/4502441
And Jews? How about this from Eternal Treblinka by Isaac Bashevis Singer, Jewish Nobel laureate:
“We know now, as we have always known instinctively, that animals can suffer as much as human beings. Their emotions and their sensitivity are often stronger than those of a human being. Various philosophers and religious leaders tried to convince their disciples and followers that animals are nothing more than machines without a soul, without feelings. However, anyone who has ever lived with an animal – be it a dog, a bird or even a mouse – knows that this theory is a brazen lie, invented to justify cruelty.”
And finally about “extremism”:
As Tom Regan said But I am an extremist when it comes to rape I am against it all the time. I am an extremist when it comes to child abuse I am against it all the time. I am an extremist when it comes to sexual discrimination, racial discrimination I am against it all the time. I am an extremist when it comes to abuse to the elderly I am against it all the time.
And you may doubt that we will ever change “humanities mind” – But never doubt this: The more we evolve and become “civilized”. The more we become aware, awake and engaged that there ARE alternatives to unnecessary bloodshed – This topic will only escalate and non-violent advocacy will only grow. Perhaps it will be in your great-grandchildren’s time that they will look upon meat eaters as the deviants? But I personally have no doubt this time will come and am proud to be a visionary against “the mob”.
