Every seven seconds someone turns 60 in the United States.

Today more than ever retirees and those close to retirement need to learn how to avoid costly retirement mistakes.  On Saturday, Oct. 2, at 9 a.m., Jim Flanagan, a retirement planning expert, will be hosting a free seminar at Mullen’s Bar & Grill, 3080 Warrenville Road in Lisle.

The session is called “Six Mistakes Retirees Make With Their Finances and How to Avoid Them.”

At the seminar, Flanagan will explain:

·        A retiree’s biggest mistake and how to avoid it

·        Where to safely put money now for Income

·        What your stockbroker didn’t tell you about your mutual funds

·        The least costly method of long-term care protection—free!

·        How to avoid making the IRS your number one beneficiary

·        How one foolish error can lose you money—even in government-backed bonds

These and other questions will be answered at this free educational seminar.  No reservations are necessary, and Flanagan encourages seniors to invite family members and other trusted advisors.

Flanagan is founder and owner of Bentron Financial Group, Inc., with offices in Naperville and Oak Park. He is a Certified Estate Advisor, Certified Estate Planner, Certified Senior Advisor, and Registered Financial Consultant. He also is on the national advisory board for the National Association of Financial and Estate Planning.

Seniors sometimes operate under a set of assumptions that they grew up with, but which have perished long before they have, said Flanagan.

“It’s really a different world that we are living in,” he said. “It used to be that you retired at 65 and died at 75. Now, at 75, you’re just hitting your stride. People are simply living longer, which reduces the size of the estate that they pass on to their heirs.”

“This is setting into motion a chain effect that will mean each succeeding generation will need to become increasingly mindful of the extended length of time that they are likely to live and their need to be self-reliant financially,” Flanagan added. “Consequently, we all need to think earlier about thinking long-term.”

A board member for Oak Park Township Senior Services, Flanagan has been assisting senior investors for nearly 25 years. His company is online at www.bentron.com.

Mullen’s, on the northeast corner of Warrenville and Naperville roads, is online at www.mullensbarandgrill.com.
