From the community

It’s a Family Affair at Villa St. Benedict

People move to retirement communities for a variety of reasons and at different times in their lives. At Villa St Benedict, we have noticed a slight trend that involves members of the same family coming to make our community their permanent home.
One of these pairs is a mother and daughter. Ann started out living independently in one of our villa homes. After having hip and shoulder surgeries, she made the move to the assisted living portion of our campus. She has a large two bedroom apartment with plenty of room for her caregiver and her cat. Her daughter, another Ann, was living in downtown Chicago, but wanted to be closer to her mom. She chose an apartment home in the next building. They enjoy reading and going on vacations with the entire family.. Both women agree that they are comfortable knowing they are just a hop, skip and a jump away from each other.
Another pair is siblings, Hillard and Rita. Hillard is a bachelor who was living alone after his mother died. His sister, Rita, had been living by herself for 16 years after her husband passed away. They went to visit a number of places before deciding upon VSB and chose their apartment homes before the building was even completed. They both enjoy a busy lifestyle and have plenty of activities to keep them active and engaged. Since they are Catholic, they appreciate having the chapel available each day for Mass. They also like to exercise in the health center, play Wii bowling, volunteer at the gift shop and are part of the residents singing group. They certainly enjoy having a built in buddy to share all that VSB has to offer to active seniors.
Lastly, Lill and Marie are not only sisters, but they share the same apartment home. Lill never married, but was always close to her sister. Marie married and raised three children. After she and her husband became empty nesters, they asked Lill to move into their home and she agreed. As time passed, Marie and Herb saw an ad in their parish bulletin for VSB and came by for a visit. They signed up for a villa home, but Herb suddenly passed away. Marie made the decision to move with her sister to an apartment, rather than the villa home. They have lived here for more than 3 years and feel it is like being around family. They attend Mass most days and participate in games like pinochle and rummikub. Maria likes the peace of mind of not having to worry about home maintenance. All in all, these two sisters enjoy each others company and are glad to be together.
One never knows what the future may bring, but living at Villa St. Benedict has definitely had a positive impact on these family members and the many others who call us their home.
