Charges are pending in an head-on collision in Lincolnshire that claimed the life of a Buffalo Grove woman days after her wedding.
Shruti Phadnis, 26, died Wednesday of injuries she suffered in the Jan. 13 crash that occurred when her vehicle collided head-on with a car traveling on the wrong side of Illinois Highway 21, officials said.
Phadnis’ widower, Devang Vora, said the two had been married for just one day when the accident occurred.
The crash occurred shortly before 9 p.m. on Jan. 13, moments after police received multiple 911 calls reporting that a motorist was driving recklessly and had damaged street signs near the intersection of Illinois Highways 21 and 22, Lincolnshire Police Chief Peter Kinsey said.
An officer was nearby, at Highway 21 and Aptakisic Road, when a Honda CRV traveling south in northbound lanes sped past him and collided head-on with a Toyota and a Jeep, officials.
Four people involved were taken to local hospitals, including Phadnis, who was at Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville when she died, authorities said. Kinsey said the other three have been released from the hospital.
Vora, who said his wife will receive last rites in India, called her “a very sweet and caring person.”
Phadnis had been an international student at Illinois State University’s College of Applied Science and Technology until 2010, university spokesman Jay Groves said.
