Green Team organizes Green Living Fair

A Libertyville resident said the village already has a good thing going with recycling, but there is always room for improvement.

That is why Katey Aynilian of the Lake County Green Congregations Green Team and about 30 volunteers have been organizing the March 12 Green Living Fair at the Libertyville Civic Center.

“We can always do better. We’ve got a good start, but we need to keep pushing forward,” Aynillian said. “I’m very excited to be a part of this. Sometimes you feel like you are spinning your wheels or that you are alone and then you realize you have many people helping. We definitely have power in numbers.”

At the fair, which was has been approved by the village board, visitors will be able to visit 30 exhibitors as well as recycle household goods including electronics, cell phones, Styrofoam, tennis shoes, hearing aids, printer cartridges and plastic bags. ComEd will also be giving away compact fluorescent light bulbs.

The location of this year’s event is also important, Aynillian said. While the Green Team pools efforts through the communication among several area churches, she wants the public to know the event is about the environment and not about religion.

“We felt perhaps some people wouldn’t come because we’re a church organization and people might think people are going to try to convert them, but that is not the case,” she said.

The main issue is learning about being green, which isn’t always easy.

The Green Team has hosted Earth Day events in the past, but Aynillian said she hopes fair scheduled in March will allow more people more opportunities to learn.

“We decided to host the event in March because a few people had conflicts on Earth Day, and this way we can accommodate more people. We decided to not have everything fall on the same day. It gets too crazy.”
