Lake Forest's 28th Annual Tree Lighting Ceremony draws hundreds

Another year and another delightful Lake Forest Tree Lighting Ceremony took place the day after Thanksgiving, Friday, November 25th, in Lake Forest's historic Market Square on Western Avenue by the train station.

Although a senior citizen in terms of years, my enthusiasm never wavers from year to year. I never tire of observing the ice sculpting demonstrations by Art Below Zero or watching tiny tots with their parents in tow approach Santa with wonderment in their eyes.

The weather was mild enough, but with just enough nip in the air to enjoy the festive atmosphere of a packed Market Square without the need to duck inside for a time-out, warm-up session.

The store fronts circling Market Square with their attractive, decorated holiday windows did beckon my attention. It was good to see people shopping inside the stores as I made my round on foot to circle Market Square.

While lingering in Market Square waiting for the caroling concert to begin by the Lake Forest High School Choristers under the direction of Timothy Haskell, his 26th year of participation in Lake Forest's Tree Lighting Ceremony as Director of Choral Music at Lake Forest High School, I made my way to the refreshment stand where complimentary hot chocolate, donut holes and cider were being distributed by Aramark Catering.

Finally it was time for the caroling concert to begin, where I raised my voice with others to join in a sing-along of carols and holiday songs with the Lake Forest Choristers.

With the end of the concert came the climax of the evening when the tree lights were set aglow with Mayor Rummel presiding.

As tradition has it, the switch to turn on the tree lights prompted the singing of Handel's "Hallelujah Chorus" where Lake Forest High School alumni are invited to join in with the Lake Forest Choristers.

With the completion of Lake Forest's 28th annual Tree Lighting Ceremony, people lingered in the Square enjoying the fellowship of family and friends, spreading joy in the spirit of the season.
