SUMMARY:Bell Tolls for Barber
DESCRIPTION;CHARSET=UTF-8:Celebrating 100th birthday of composer Samuel Barber and the 150th birthday of Gustav Mahler Chicago Symphony Orchestra James Conlon, Conductor Joshua Bell, Violin Tickets: Reserved $80/$60 Lawn $20 Gates open at 5:00 PM Violinist Joshua Bell, a Ravinia favorite, returns to perform Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto, arguably the most popular violin concerto in the entire repertoire. The work not only boasts luscious harmonies and broad melodic gestures, but also broke new ground in concerto form (no orchestral intro, three continuous movements with no breaks). Barber’s Adagio for Strings is widely regarded as one of the modern masterpieces of classical music. The piece has been embedded in pop culture, played at funerals for statesmen and doubling as a film score for such movies as Platoon and The Elephant Man. In time for the Mahler’s 150th birthday, the program also features the Adagio from Mahler’s 10th and final symphony, thus concluding James Conlon’s multi-year Mahler cycle.
