February is Heart Health Month and the Greater LaGrange YMCA cares about you, your health and your heart, which is why the Y will be offering a workshop on heart rate monitors this month. The talk and workshop will begin at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 23, in the YMCA, 1100 E. 31st St., La Grange Park.
Linda Wilkinson, a personal trainer and Commit-to-be-Fit coach at the YMCA, will discuss the importance of strengthening the heart and how exercise can improve a heart's functionality.
"It is good to know what your maximum (heart rate) is because you should work out at different aerobic levels," she explained. "The heart rate monitor tells us when to add tension (during a cycle class or workout session) so you can personalize your workout."
The YMCA teaches cycle classes that have heart rate monitors attached so cyclists can push themselves to achieve the best heart rate. Many of the fitness machines also feature heart rate monitors and, occasionally, the YMCA holds a Heart Rate Monitor class.
