Wednesday, 2/22: “A Soldier's Song: Black Singing Soldiers in the Civil War”. Dole Hall at 2:00pm
In honor of Black History Month, Dr. Johari Jabir, Ph.D. of the U. of I. Department of African American Studies will present on the sacred singing of slaves in America in the years leading up to the Civil War. Known as "spirituals," enslaved Africans composed music that expressed their sense of humanity and freedom. Black soldiers who served in the Civil War continued this tradition of sacred music. The presentation will explore the songs written and performed by Black soldiers from the Civil War, and will consider the role of music in the making of their manhood. As Black Singing Soldiers, not only did they create music to sustain them during their own time, but they left behind a legacy of music and manhood that continues to influence today's music.
