National educational tour about treatment of immigrants to stop at USF

JOLIET, Ill. – The University of St. Francis is a stop on a national educational tour focused on raising awareness about the treatment of immigrants without a visa.
The free event, spearheaded by the National Alliance of Latin American and Caribbean Communities (NALACC), will begin at 7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 21 in the Sexton Auditorium in Moser Performing Arts Center at the university’s Joliet campus, 500 Wilcox St.
The event includes a movie presentation and discussion focused on harsh conditions faced by migrants in transit through Mexico and the anti-immigrant sentiment and laws that undocumented immigrants face.
The panelists include The Rev. Alejandro Solalinde, a Mexican-Catholic priest; Cristian Pineda Flores, a young Mexican visual artist; and Marcela Zamora, a filmmaker.
Solalinde has dedicated his life to fighting against the systematic human rights abuses endured by immigrants who transit through Mexico in hopes of entering the United States.
Flores’ work has been inspired in his artwork by the human tragedy involving migrants in transit through Mexico, and Zamora’s film “Maria en Tierra de Nadie” depicts the harsh reality that of undocumented im¬migrants in the United States are facing today.
