A 26-year-old Plainfield man who allegedly ran away after causing a two-vehicle crash that seriously injured a young girl southeast of Joliet Monday is scheduled to appear in court at 1:30 p.m. today.

Sheriff’s Police spokesman Kathy Hoffmeyer said Juan M. Serrano-Ortega of the 200 block of Crosing Wind Drive was driving a pickup truck southbound on County Line Road around 9:30 a.m. when he turned left in front of a van containing a 34-year-old Shorewood mother, her 9-year-old daughter and her two sons, ages 10 and 13.

Hoffmeyer said the impact caused the van to roll over several times, expelling the girl.

Troy Fire Protection District paramedics transported the mother and three children to Provena St. Joseph Medical Center, where the girl underwent spinal surgery. The mother and two sons didn’t require immediate medical treatment, Hoffmeyer said.

Deputies booked Serrano-Ortega into the Will County Adult Detention Facility on charges of leaving the scene of a personal-injury collision, driving on an expired license, making an improper left turn and operating an uninsured motor vehicle after they found him “hiding behind houses” approximately one-half mile north of the crash, Hoffmeyer said.

Serrano-Ortega remained in the Adult Detention Facility this morning on an immigration hold.
