Voter registration deadline for March election nears

The deadline to register to vote in the March 20 primary election is Feb. 21, Will County Clerk Nancy Schultz Voots said.

Two forms of identification are required – one with a current name and address and a second one that shows a name.

Currently, registered voters do not need to re-register unless they have changed their name or address. Voters who have moved can complete the back portion of the voter card and return to the Will County Clerk’s office or email the new address to voterregistration@willcountyillinois.com.

However, all Will County voters should have received new voter registration cards in the mail in recent weeks because of changes in precinct boundaries and polling sites due to redistricting.

Voots cut 142 precincts in Will County, bringing the total to 303. The change will save the county about $200,000. In Joliet, precincts were cut from 64 to 37. Each precinct will have about 1,200 to 1,300 voters.

Applicants should come to the county clerk’s office, located at 302 N. Chicago St., Joliet. The office is open 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. weekdays and 9 a.m. to noon Saturdays. On Feb. 21, the office will have extended hours until 6 p.m.
