A 58-year-old Joliet woman was struck and killed early Thursday while on her routine morning walk, police said.
At about 6:45 a.m., the woman was crossing North Larkin Avenue near Mayfield Avenue on the city’s west side when a 23-year-old man in a pick-up truck struck and killed her, said Joliet Police Captain Les O’Connor.
The victim was identified as Penny Kalamaras, of Joliet, according to the Will County Coroner’s Office. An autopsy is scheduled for Friday.
The driver, who is a resident of Camby, Ind., near Indianapolis, was not cited, O’Connor said. The case is still under investigation, but it does not appear that speeding or alcohol was factor, he said.
The man was driving northbound on Larkin when the accident occurred. Kalamaras was transported to Provena Saint Joseph Medical Center in Joliet where she was pronounced dead at 10:30 a.m., O’Connor said.
On Thursday afternoon, Kalamaras’ son, Will Kalamaras, posted a message on her Facebook page that read: “Hi Mom, I love you with all my heart and I will miss you more than you will ever know.
“You were an amazing mother and I wish I got to properly say goodbye. Rest in peace.”
