Before Joliet Junior College demolishes the historic White Store in downtown Joliet to make way for its new City Center Campus, they have to get rid of the random pieces of furniture, books and other items that have been left inside.
JJC will host a silent auction between 9 a.m. and noon Saturday at the store, located at 235 North Chicago St. Winners will be notified at noon when the bidding is complete.
There will be a bevy of unique pieces – including light fixtures, a metal sled, antique TV and a snow blower. Photos of some items can be viewed at www.flickr.com/photos/jolietjuniorcollege/sets/72157625246775022.
The four-story White Store is slated to be demolished in November, however, that may be pushed back to January because of the need to remove asbestos. A ceremonial groundbreaking is scheduled for mid-December.
The 40,000-square-foot building dates to the 1880s and originally was a clothing factory, then a popular spot to buy blue jeans in the 1960s and most recently a warehouse for a local furniture store.
The new 10-story City Center Campus building, which will replace the White Store, is estimated to bring more than 500 new students to downtown Joliet.
