Two teams from the Hoffman United Soccer Club (HUSC) headed to Downers Grove, IL this past weekend to take part in Socctoberfest 2010. Ideal fall weather at colorful McCollum Park set the background for what would be a good day for both teams at the Socctoberfest soccer tournament.

The HUSC Lady Hawks, competing in the U9 Girls division, finished atop their preliminary bracket with two wins and a draw, earning them a spot in the championship game. Their opponents for the championship were the Kickers U9 White squad, who outscored their opponents during its three preliminary games, 28-0. The championship game, however, would prove to be a low-scoring match as the Lady Hawks and Kickers White battled to a 1-1 draw at the end of regulation. After a scoreless overtime, the two squads faced a decisive penalty shootout to determine which of the teams would be champions. In the end, the Kickers White would net the championship with a 4-to-3 goals win in the PK shootout. The Lady Hawks, however, could consider their efforts a success after some great team play, which earned them the runners-up spot in the eight team division.

On the boys’ side, the HUSC U12 Red Devils competed in the short-sided 4v4 Socctoberfest tournament. Coming off the preliminary games with a 3-0-0 record, the Red Devils faced a rematch with the Roadrunners U12 Team Two squad (2-1-0) for the division championship. The earlier matchup between these two teams saw a tight battle, with only a last minute Red Devils goal separating the two teams. In the championship game, the U12 Team Two squad was determined to put up a challenge and held the Red Devils close through the first half. But two additional goals by the Red Devils in the second half secured the 3-0 win for the HUSC side and earned them the Socctoberfest U12 4v4 championship.

Socctoberfest 2010 proved to be a success for the Hoffman United Soccer Club as its U9 Lady Hawks and U12 Red Devils each competed well and enjoyed a great day of soccer.
