SWANCC residents bring documents to shred at this no cost event.

On Saturday, September 18, 2010, the Solid Waste Agency of Northern Cook County (SWANCC) will host a document destruction event as an additional service for residents in SWANCC member communities. ID’s will be checked for proof of residency.

The event will take place at Hoffman Estate’s Village Hall (1900 Hassell Road) from 9:00 to 11:00 am. There is no cost to attend. SWANCC residents drive up in their vehicles and workers will unload the paper into toter carts. The paper is then loaded into a truck on site and cross-shredded in minutes. The shredded documents are then transported to Groot’s recycling facility in Elk Grove Village and baled before being recycled into new paper.

Since 2005, SWANCC has shredded over 443,910 pounds of paper from member communities. Typical documents that can be shredded include medical forms, bank statements, personal files, retired tax forms and other documents. Staples and paper clips are acceptable, but binders should be removed.

“Every consumer is at risk of identity theft and criminals have gotten very astute at going into garbage cans and recycling bins stealing names, addresses and even bank account numbers” said C. Brooke Beal, SWANCC’s Executive Director. “Because of this constant threat, SWANCC wants to assist residents with destroying their personal information, making sure that all shredding is done on site at the host location before being recycled.”
