An 11-year-old girl crossing the street at First Street and Garfield Avenue was struck by a vehicle driven by a Willowbrook woman at about 3 p.m. Thursday, according to police.
The girl was walking in the crosswalk with at least two other people when she was struck by a Chrysler Pacifica. The vehicle was turning from westbound First Street to southbound Garfield. According to police, the driver did not see the pedestrians because her vision was obstructed by sunlight.
The 11-year-old was transported to Good Samaritan Hospital for non-life threatening injuries and released. The 41-year-old motorist was cited for failing to yield for a pedestrian.
The village last week made the intersection a four-way stop because a 15-year-old boy had been struck there in December. No citations were issued in that accident and the boy was treated and released from Adventist Hinsdale Hospital.
The four-way stop was recommended by the police department after a traffic study was done showing that the intersection is one of the busiest in the village. An average of 10,000 vehicles and 70 pedestrians a day use the intersection.
