Hinsdale motorists beware: A new four-way stop was installed at Garfield Avenue and First Street Wednesday morning.
The village board recently approved making the intersection a four-way stop after a 15-year-old boy was struck in the intersection Dec. 21. The four-way stop was recommended by the police department following a traffic study that showed the intersection is one of the busiest in the village with an average of 10,000 vehicles and 70 pedestrians a day using it.
Because Garfield is a wide street, Police Chief Bradley Bloom also said vehicles can pull next to and sometimes around other vehicles that are turning, creating a sight obstruction.
“Due to the configuration of the street and the line of sight we thought the only thing we could do is install a four-way stop,” he said.
In the December accident, the boy was struck when a car traveling north on Garfield tried to pass a pick-up truck that had stopped on the street. He was treated and released from Adventist Hinsdale Hospital, police said.
Bloom said a new shop on the southwest corner of the street, Dip and Dogs, also has become a hangout for teens who use the intersection to get to it from Hinsdale Middle School.
