Hinsdale’s plan commissioners approved a public hearing for the special use and site plan review needed before additional platform tennis courts can be constructed at Katherine Legge Memorial Park.

Village Manager David Cook said the hearing is scheduled for Jan. 12.

Hinsdale’s Platform Tennis Association said the 2010-11 season membership numbers are up and the village’s courts are constantly in use — even during weekday afternoons.

However, neighbors of the park residing in Burr Ridge have voiced distaste with the idea of adding courts due to the late hours, sound and bright lights associated with the game.

“Because of the location of KLM Park, our ordinances require us to notify residents of residences within 250 feet of the property,” Cook said. “Everyone who borders the courts at KLM will receive a notice.”

Gina Hassett, director of the parks and recreation department, said notifying local rsidents is a top priority of the village.

“We don’t want anyone to be blindsided by the project,” Hassett said.

At the hearing, Cook said the village will present the plan for two new platform tennis courts. At that time, everyone who wishes to speak on the matter will have a chance, he said.
