The weather may be icy, but store windows in Downtown Highland Park are especially hot this season! The Downtown Highland Park Alliance recently hosted a Holiday Window Display Contest for local retailers. The theme was “Icy Hot,” in which store owners could show their creativity with both “hot” and “cold” design elements in their window display.
At the Holiday Lighting Ceremony on Nov. 20, the winner was announced: Stationery Station and owner Sheryl Oberman.
A clear depiction of the “Icy Hot” theme with hot and cool color combinations, along with a very detailed and innovative product display, earned Stationary Station the top honor. Stationary Station was publicly recognized at the ceremony, and will also receive a complimentary advertisement in a local publication, courtesy of the Alliance.
Three guest judges assisted the Alliance in selecting the winner: John Cody of WBBM News Radio 780 and Sally Higginson and Betsy Brint of “Walking on Air with Betsy and Sal,” a syndicated radio station recorded out of their Downtown Highland Park studio. The judges told the Alliance staff how much they enjoyed viewing all of the festive displays, and that it was incredibly difficult to choose a winner among the bunch.
This season’s Window Display Contest participants included:

“The windows truly add to the holiday spirit and enhance the festive atmosphere in Downtown Highland Park. We are thrilled with the results of this new initiative and we look forward to seeing what our merchants come up with next year,” said Downtown Highland Park Alliance Executive Director Sarah Wiebenson. “We encourage shoppers to come see the windows for themselves—this is just one way they can find that ‘hometown’ holiday experience in Downtown Highland Park this season.”
Local residents and visitors can view the decorated windows, along with public art displays created by the Downtown Highland Park Alliance along Central Avenue throughout the holiday season.
