Despite the warm weather, Highland Park residents can take advantage of a synthetic ice rink at Port Clinton Square through spring.
Because the rink is not made of ice, it’s not dependent on the weather. Residents can skate on it even when it’s above freezing.
“It’s been a lot of fun and it’s drawn a lot of people from different communities,” said Tony Schor, president of North Shore Public Relations and a spokesman for the Downtown Highland Park Business Alliance, which his sponsoring the rink. “It’s like a mini-Rockefeller Center.”
The rink, which opened in December, is expected to be open until April, but may be open longer, depending on the interest, Schor said. So far, the rink appears to be most popular on Friday nights, with as many as 30 people showing up to skate, Schor said.
Besides the fun of ice skating, the rink is designed to attract shoppers to the downtown, Schor said. It is expected to be an annual tradition.
“It’s not going to be a one and done,” Schor said.
Admission is $2 per session and skate rentals are $2. Free skates is on Tuesday. Patrons can bring their own skates. They can skate as long as they want because there’s no time limit, Schor said.
The rink is open from 3:15 p.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday; 3:15 p.m. to 10 p.m. Friday; 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday; and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.
