A 59-year-old school bus driver has been charged with child endangerment after she allegedly left a 3-year-old North Shore girl on a bus Thursday morning, Highland Park police said Friday.
Rosario Rodriguez, 59, of the 22oo block of Touhy Ave. in Chicago, picked up a busload of children for the North Shore School District 112, dropping them off at Green Bay School at 1936 Greenbay Road.
Police said Rodriguez let the children off at about 9 a.m.
Shortly afterward, the district staff noticed that one of preschoolers had not made it to school even though her parents had not called saying she’d be absent, school officials said. Principal Nita Goodman called the missing girl’s parents, who said that they had put her on the bus at about 8:30 a.m.
Police contacted Rodriguez at her Chicago home shortly after 10 a.m. She told police that she’d checked the bus and found no one left on the bus, police said.
Upon a recheck of the bus, the girl was found unharmed, police said.
“We were glad that a memeber of our school family was quickly located safe and sound,” said Goodman in a statement, released by the district. “However, this situation should never have happened.”
Rodriguez was released pending a court date on Oct. 25 at the Lake County courthouse in Waukegan.
District officials expect to meet with Rodriguez’s bus company, Skokie-based Alltown Bus Services, Inc., to discuss the incident.
“There is no room for error when it come to the safety of our children,” said David Behlow, District 113 superintendent in a statement released by the district. “We are meeting with Alltown’s representatives because we want to be assured that the company is talking the appropriate measures to ensure that this never occurs again. When it comes to our children, the acceptable error rate is zero.”
