2 teens charged with attempted car theft

Lugo

Patlan

Gurnee police charged two teens with attempting to steal a car from a shopping center parking lot and knocking down the owner of the vehicle as she attempted to stop them.

Christopher Lugo, 19, of Zion was charged Friday with felony counts of theft, aggravated battery and criminal damage to property. Noreen Patlan, 19, of North Chicago was charged with criminal trespass to a vehicle and felony obstructing justice.

Police said the pair attempted to steal a gray 2001 Honda Civic left running Wednesday evening in a parking lot at 6120 Grand Avenue. The owner, a 19-year-old Round Lake Heights woman was sitting nearby in her boyfriend’s truck, waiting for the vehicle to warm up, police said.

As the couple entered the car, the owner opened the passenger’s side door. The driver shifted the vehicle into reverse and accelerated, knocking over the women, who hit her head on the window and also injured her shoulder, police said. The driver also hit a parked vehicle as he was backing up, police said.

Patlan was arrested shortly after the incident outside a nearby fast-food restaurant, where a friend had picked her up, police said. She appeared for a bond hearing Friday morning. Lugo was arrested Jan. 26 in Waukegan and is scheduled to appear in bond court Saturday.
