The following CLC faculty and staff members have recently been recognized for significant statewide, regional or national achievements in their fields.
The Judicial Services department was honored by the National Safety Council (NSC) at their 98th Annual Congress and Expo in San Diego Oct. 2. Peggy Miller (director of Judicial Services) and Lisa Daniels (training coordinator) were present to receive awards for Star Performance for Defensive Driving Course (DDC)-Online course (more than 17,000 students trained during the 2009 reporting year). The Alive at 25 Program and the DDC 8 hour course were honored with the Trend Setter Award. In addition, Director Peggy Miller presented at the National Safety Council’s first Illinois Training Agency Forum in Itasca on Aug. 27.
The Public Relations and Marketing department won two awards at the District 3 Conference of the National Council for Marketing and Public Relations, held in Indianapolis, Ind., Oct. 6-8. The department won a silver medallion of achievement for the summer 2010 TV commercial and a bronze medallion of achievement for the 2008-09 college annual report, “Speaking Volumes: A 40th Anniversary Anthology.”
Dr. Ben Almassi, philosophy instructor, published “Disability, Functional Diversity and Trans/feminism” in the International Journal of Feminist Approaches to Bioethics 3.2 (2010). On Oct. 14, Almassi made a presentation called “Moral Trust and Ponzi Schemes” at the Vincentian Business Ethics Conference at DePaul University.
Ben Bates, ceramics lab assistant, has work on display in the 3rd Annual Lillstreet International exhibition in Chicago, a juried exhibition that is designed to address contemporary issues in and the ever-changing scope of ceramic art and at http://www.lillstreet.com/international.
Dr. Lance David, automotive technology instructor/department chair, was appointed to a new Advisory Council for the Motorist Assurance Program (MAP), which was formed by the Automotive Maintenance and Repair Association (AMRA) Board of Directors.
Kathleen Lovelace, faculty librarian, authored the featured article, “Library Education: Bringing the Outside In,” in the October 2010 issue of The Reporter, the official publication of the Illinois Library Association.
Two Robert T. Wright Community Gallery of Art staff members had pieces selected for an exhibition, “Contemporary Realism Biennial 2010” at the Fort Wayne Museum of Art (Indiana). Steve Jones, gallery curator, exhibited an oil entitled, “Language of Diplomacy” and Jane Ellefson, preparator, exhibited two oils, “Pewter Pitcher with Oranges” and “Orange Spiral #3” The exhibit runs until Nov. 7.
Dara Reiff, sustainability coordinator, was a presenter at The Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE) and American College and University Presidents’ Climate Commitment (ACUPCC) conference in Denver, Colo., Oct. 10-13. Reiff served on a panel titled “Higher Ed in the Green Economy.”
Bob Remedi, biology instructor, won the National Association of Biology Teachers (NABT) Two-Year College Biology Teaching Award, sponsored by NABT’s Two-Year College Section and McGraw-Hill. The award recognizes an educator who employs new and creative teaching techniques. Remedi will receive the award at the NABT Professional Development Conference in Minneapolis in November. The award includes $1,000 and a one-year complimentary NABT membership.
Sociology instructor John Tenuto gave two presentations Chicago Star Trek Convention Oct. 23 and 24 — one on director Nicholas Meyer’s photo collection from the Star Trek 2 movie and one on 44 years of Star Trek collectibles. Tenuto is an expert on sociology principles used in the Star Wars and Star Trek movies and TV series.
