GBS News for the Week of Aug. 30

Glenbrook South will host its Parent Night in the Classroom event on Wednesday, September 15, at 7 p.m. This event offers parents a chance to walk in their student’s shoes and follow an abbreviated class schedule, meet their teachers and learn more about courses and academic goals.

A new program at GBS called Internship debuts this fall with more than 60 students venturing out into local businesses to learn the ropes of various professions.

Junior and senior students volunteer to work 75 total hours after school during the semester as a way to learn more about potential career choices and to help them develop important skills such as improved writing, office attire and etiquette.

If you are interested in offering a GBS student an invaluable internship opportunity at your business, please contact Rosie McManamon at 847-486-4447 or email to rmcmanamon@glenbrook225.org or Dawn Hall at 847-486-4441 or email to dhall@glenbrook225.org. There are specific needs in the areas of journalism, pharmacy, business management, marketing, sales, psychology, pediatrics, investments, veterinary, physical therapy, neurology, fashion design, dentistry, media and engineering.  If you have an idea that is not listed above, please contact us and we can work with you to see if there is a potential match.

More than 250 GBS students are members of the Student to Student club, which promotes an environment that is void of pressures to drink or use drugs.  All members of the club pledge to refrain from drinking and drug use and instead participate in monthly social outings that are drug and alcohol free. Participating students serve as role models to their school community.  They are lead by Co-Presidents: Eric Kogut and Jenny Koloms; Publicity Directors: Katie Coleman, Alyson Block, and Dan Bernstein; Social Event Directors:  T.J. Mihelic, John Pease, and Andy Dunk; Outreach Directors: Erin Brennan, Mollie, Mc Mahon, and Ali Shaw; and Membership Directors: Jordan Freedman, Mollie McMahon, and Tony Kizhakkekuttu. Katie Hoover, Scott Greenspan and Sharon Kaltman are the faculty sponsors of the club.

GBS class of 1980 graduate Steve Levitan was awarded two Emmys this year for his work on the hit TV comedy series Modern Family.  Levitan is a writer and executive producer on the show and has enjoyed a successful career in television since 1991, including work on Wings, The Larry Sanders Show, Frasier, Stark Raving Mad, and Just Shoot Me.  He has been nominated for three Emmys and has been awarded one other Emmy for his work on Frasier. Levitan was honored as a Glenbrook South High School distinguished alumnus in 2001.

The Glenbrook South Instrumental League (GBSIL) will host a garage sale and car wash on Saturday, September 11, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the GBS west parking lot (4000 W. Lake Avenue).  Additional event festivities will include a Color Guard bake sale and a GBSIL alumni hotdog stand.

Garage sale donations are encouraged and can be dropped off at the GBS Band Room after 4 p.m. on school days between September 3-10.  Donations can also be brought to the site on September 11, before 8 a.m. Parent and student volunteers are still needed to work two-hour shifts at the event.  For more information, please contact Mary Ann Topping at 847-729-9126. The rain date for this event is Sunday, September 12, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. All proceeds will benefit the GBS Marching Titans and the Color Guard.
