Springman Teacher Brings Argentinian Adventure into her Classroom
Springman Middle School sixth grade teacher Erin Lien was recently awarded a Fulbright-Hays Scholarship, which allowed her to travel together with a diverse group of sixteen American teachers who went to Argentina over the summer to take part in an exciting educational adventure. Lien has incorporated the knowledge she gained through her experience into the curriculum for her sixth grade Language Arts classes, who are now working on a cultural identity project. The students will learn about the culture of Argentina while defining and deconstructing the notion of culture. They will be exposed to Argentinian literature and song. The culmination of the project will allow students to reflect on their own cultural identity, a particularly important exercise in middle school when students are constantly analyzing their sense of self and defining their identity. Lien shared that personal highlights of the trip to Argentina were, “visiting the United States embassy in Buenos Aires, visiting the northwest province of Jujuy, and learning about various indigenous communities in the country.” She stated, “It was a wonderful experience for me personally and professionally.” The group enjoyed a variety of tours including visits to schools, museums, cultural sites, the Iguazu National Park and several lectures.
