A bookkeeper for Hackney’s restaurant on Harms Road in Glenview has been charged with embezzling more than $180,000 over nearly two years.
Shawn Dragman, 52, of Glenview was arrested March 17 in Northfield by Glenview police and charged with felony theft after a six-month investigation.
As a part-time bookkeeper for Hackney’s for about seven years, Dragman is responsible for depositing the previous day’s receipts, according to Cook County State’s Attorney documents.
Authorities allege that beginning in July 2008, Dragman, would take cash from the deposits and deposit checks endorsed with an old Hackney’s stamp in return.
The bank never sends copies of the deposit slips, so the restaurant owners were not aware of the situation, according to the documents.
But last August the bank sent Hackney’s a correction notice with the deposit slip. An office manager saw that the check was one of the restaurant’s own, and police launched an investigation.
Dragman is accused of stealing more than $186,000 from July 2008 through September 2010, according to the state’s attorney’s documents, which also indicate that Dragman deposited more than $170,000 into bank accounts for her and her husband during the same period.
Dragman and a Hackney’s representative could not be reached for comment.
Dragman’s next court date is April 8.

It’s SAD news.
