Glencoe Train Station: BEAUTIFICATION!

Volunteers Pruning Glencoe Train Station Shrubs

Volunteers Pruning Glencoe Train Station Shrubs

The Glencoe Garden Club's Civic Committee, Eagle Scout Candidate Bryan Kelly and the Village of Glencoe coordinated to prune neglected shrubbery at the Glencoe Train Station on Saturday, February 18. Bryan Kelly assembled the large crew, who worked all afternoon to complete the significant task. Bryan also treated the crew to pizza and other snacks to keep energy high and to ensure that no one left the work site hungry. A volunteer for the Chicago Botanic Garden provided pruning instruction prior to the event, and links to Websites that detail shrub renovation were distributed in advance to participants as well. The Village of Glencoe agreed to remove the considerable yard waste produced by the project from the train station property.

The second and final portion of Bryan Kelly's Eagle Scout Project will be completed in May or June. It involves the renovation of the garden surrounding the large concrete "Glencoe" sign parallel to the tracks at the Glencoe Train Station. Once again, Brian will involve the Glencoe Garden Club and the Village of Glencoe to benefit those who use the Metra as well as benefit the larger Glencoe community.

The Glencoe Garden Club continually fills with seasonal plantings the twelve window boxes that adorn the Glencoe Train Station. During the growing season, the live plantings require watering by Garden Club Members on at least a weekly basis. Pine boughs fill the window boxes during the winter months.
