Each year Kiwanis International encourages all local clubs to participate in service activities especially on their ONE DAY which was April 2nd this year. Services are provided at other times year round. This year the Kiwanis Club of Central DuPage County participated in worldwide "Kiwanis One Day" with three approved projects.

SCARCE is a recycling and environmental education center for central DuPage County located at 799 Roosevelt Road, Building #2, Suite 108, Glen Ellyn. Erin Kennedy greeted the volunteers and gave the Club members a tour of the facility. It has a book rescue program, tools for schools section, a library, a crayon recycling program, and other recycling activities. SCARCE has an evironmental program that can be presented in the schools, to youth groups, or in the SCARCE Center. The services can be used locally; some teachers drive in from out of state for materials; and they ship items worldwide.
After the tour Sean Wunderlich, a staff member, explained how to stamp and sort the donated books. This was part of the "back to school program". Club members Leroy Bockleman, Richard Dunn, Phil Hartweg, and Carl Scolaro under took this effort.

The Kiwanis Club of Central DuPage County was also involved in two other projects: First was at the Parents Day Out which is a day care program for young children that allows parents to drop off preschool children. The Club volunteers cleaned toys at the PDO which is located at 424 Forest Avenue, Glen Ellyn United Methodist Church. The third ONE DAY project was to help collect food at local grocery stores for the Glen Ellyn Food Pantry at Grace Lutheran Church, 493 North Forest, Glen Ellyn and the Milton Township Food Pantry at 1492 North Main Street, Wheaton. The Kiwanis Club of Central DuPage County was represented by Marj Anderson, Cecille Bechin, Bob Ciserella, Richard Dunn, Ruby Hoskins, Carl Scolaro, and Kelli Wheeler.

Kiwanis is a global organization of volunteers dedicated to changing the world one child and one community at a time. ONE DAY exemplifies this goal. The Kiwanis Club of Central DuPage County meets each Wednesday noon for a luncheon meeting at Barone's, 475 Pennsylvania Avenue, Glen Ellyn. For more information please visit the club website: www.centraldupagekiwanis.org or Facebook. Meetings are open to the public and questions may be addressed directly to Phil Hartweg at 630-469-8166.
