COD trustees to consider raising tuition rates

Tuition could increase for College of DuPage students if trustees vote to approve a recommendation from school officials on Tuesday.

Glen Ellyn junior college officials are proposing a $4 per credit hour, or 3 percent, increase. Under the proposal, students would pay $103.15 per credit hour, compared to $99.15 per credit hour in 2012. The $4 increase would also affect tuition rates for out-of-district and out-of-state students, who under the increase would pay $290.15 and $360.15 per credit hour, respectively. Most courses are at least three credit hours.

The reasons school administrators say the increase is necessary include unreliable funding from the state, a decrease in the number of credit hours students are enrolling in, an anticipated decrease in property tax revenue and an increase in employees’ salaries as a result of union negotiations, according to a college memo.

Student fees  including technology, construction and student activity are not expected to increase.

The College of DuPage Board of Trustees is expected to vote on the recommended increase at its meeting 7 p.m. tonight at the Student Services Center Building, Room SSC 2200 on the campus, 425 Fawell Boulevard.
