When Diana Laufenberg moved back to her hometown of Glen Ellyn with a new husband and a baby on the way, she wanted to meet other women on the cusp of motherhood.
She joined the Glen Ellyn Newcomers Club, where she met six other pregnant women who still keep in touch today, about four years later.
Laufenberg, 39, is now president of the social group and is inviting the public to help the club celebrate its 60th anniversary on March 3.
Newcomers members will be showcasing 20 themed decorated tables intended to share new ideas for how to entertain, according to the group’s website. Visitors can enjoy mimosas and breakfast as they examine the tables with a guidebook detailing the items used to decorate, Laufenberg said.
The celebration is a way to recruit new members to the club, which currently includes 337 Glen Ellyn women and their families, Laufenberg said. The group organizes couple’s nights, cooking classes, book discussions, golf matches and more for families, Laufenberg said.
While people who have just moved to the village are targeted as members, any woman interested in the camaraderie can join, regardless of age, Laufenberg said. Annual dues, which are $50, help pay for guest speakers, room rentals and other events club members and their families participate in.
“A lot of people just love it and have lifelong friends,” Laufenberg said.
The club’s 60th anniversary event, “A Celebration of Tables,” is scheduled for 9 a.m. until noon March 3 at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Glen Ellyn. Admission is $10 in advance and $12 at the door.
