Looking for a little holiday spirit? Then make time to celebrate Frankfort's German heritage during the much-loved Christkindl event on December 3 and 4 from noon to 4 p.m. in the historic district in Frankfort.
"The center of this weekend is St. Nicholas, the traditional German Santa. One of the most beloved of all saints, St. Nicholas is said to visit the homes of children on St. Nicholas Day, December 6, each year to inquire whether the children have been good," explained Cindy Vassell, event co-chair and owner of The Pickwick Society Tearoom.
Frankfort’s St. Nicholas will be seen around town both Saturday and Sunday from noon till 4 p.m. dispensing good cheer and gingerbread to those who have been nice and switches to those who were naughty. Let’s hope he doesn’t have to give out too many switches!
"Christkindl Weekend is also a special time when we experience the quiet of twinkling lights in store windows decorated in this year's theme of Christmas carols. Visitors can try to guess which carol you think each window represents," Vassell added.
Having evolved over the past 25 years, Frankfort's Christkindl seamlessly blends cherished traditions with new ideas, refining this event into a holiday "must do" for area residents. Now sponsored by the Frankfort Historic Business Association, the weekend offers horse drawn wagon rides ($1/unlimited rides), cookie decorating (free), Santa's Secret Workshop (pint-size prices for pint-size shoppers, gift-wrap included), the beautiful lantern parade at 4:45 p.m. on Saturday and the blessing of the pets and pet parade at 3 p.m. on Sunday.
All of these family-friendly activities are in addition to the richly rewarding Cookie Walk (tickets are $5 each and available at The Pickwick Society Tearoom, This & That Gifts, D'Marie Salon and My Sisters & Me Boutique) and the special open house promotions offered by the downtown merchants, who will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
