Forest Park Farmers market officially opens

Elizabeth Vassolo, Triblocal.com reporter Forest Park celebrated the grand opening of its farmers market July 2. The market, which takes place from 3:30 to 7:30 p.m. every other Friday at the Howard Mohr Community Center, 7640 Jackson Blvd. features locally grown produce from Michigan, Indiana, Wisconsin and Illinois said market manager Kim Zandstra. We wanted to give people access to locally grown food," Zandstra said. There are no resellers here, everyone raises their produce or animals. This is Forest Park's first farmers market. In the past, the village attempted a Saturday morning outdoor French market, that was put on by a third party company. It was soon canceled after failing to gain shoppers attention. Forest Park Mayor Anthony Calderone hopes this market, with its strong staff of local volunteers, will bring the community together. When we did the French Market, it was commercially driven and it didnt work out, he said. We can do better with a wholesome atmosphere and good quality vendors. The next market will take place July 16. For more information, go to visitforestpark.com.
