Storms tear through Oak Park
Elizabeth Vassolo, Triblocal.com reporter Jonathan Miller thought the noises coming from outside his window the evening of June 18 were the typical sounds of a storm blowing wind followed by crackles of thunder. But what Miller, a resident of the 400 S. block of Kenilworth Avenue in Oak Park really heard, was the tree in front of his townhouse breaking in half and crashing down on the street below. I thought it was lightning, he said. I looked out my window and saw it was ass over teakettle. The weeping willow landed on top of a Chevy Malibu parked on the street. The owner of the car had yet to be identified. Dozens of spectators flocked to the scene, including Oak Park resident Suzanne Rexford who had visited several other downed trees in the area. This by far was the worst one I saw, she said. The street will remain blocked off until a crew from the villages public works department can remove the tree. Village officials said crews are working around the clock to clear the streets.
