The NorthShore University HealthSystem Grand Prix of Cycling rode through downtown Evanston July 19.

The race is one stage of the 17-day-long Point Premium Root Beer International Cycling Classic, which features 20 stages in cities throughout Illinois and Wisconsin.

More than 500 cyclists from around the world participated in the day's amateur and professional races.

In the women's 31-mile professional race, Josephine Giddens of New Zealand took first place over Mei-Yu Hsiao of Taiwan and Emma Petersen of Canada. Evanston cyclist Jessica Hill finished 25th.

In the men's 62-mile race, South African Christoff Van Heerden edged out two AmericansMichael Friedman of Colorado and Sean Sullivan of Californiato win the race. Evanston cyclist David Sachs finished 50th.
