Evanston police have arrested a suspect in the Feb. 8 hit and run incident that left an Evanston resident injured in the roadway.

66-year-old Chicago resident Eugenia Kuczynska was charged with one misdemeanor for Failure to Render Aid or Provide Information and one citation for Failure to Exercise Due Care to Avoid a Pedestrian, according to a news release from the Evanston Police Department.

Kuczynska was identified as the driver of a white Nissan Rouge which was captured on surveillance cameras striking a pedestrian crossing the street at Dempster Street and Chicago Avenue and driving away at 6:30 a.m. on Feb. 8. Paramedics were called to the scene after a report of a person having fallen in a public roadway. 10 days later, surveillance cameras showed the victim had been struck by a white SUV that fled the scene of the incident.

Police searched surrounding surveillance cameras and identified the vehicle as a Nissan Rouge but were unable to determine the license plate number. Continued searching found Kuczynska’s vehicle consistently traveling in a similar traffic pattern to the vehicle involved in the incident.

Police brought Kuczynska in for questioning on July 14 where she made, according to the release, “an incriminating statement regarding her involvement in the hit-and-run crash.” She was then taken into custody.

Despite taking her into custody, there wasn’t enough evidence to constitute a felony charge. Kuczynska has since posted bond and was released pending her court date scheduled on July 28 at Skokie Courthouse.

“The Evanston Police Department would like to recognize the investigative efforts of these traffic officers,” the news release said. “If they had not gone above and beyond, there would not have been a resolution to this case.”
