Seven Evanston Township High School students were arrested recently fter a brawl in a school hallway.
A fight broke out between two students at 11:49 a.m. on Feb. 22, according to statement released by the school. Five other student jumped in and started throwing punches, said Evanston Police Cmdr. Tom Guenther.
The fight was not gang-related and there were no weapons involved, Guenther said, adding that all involved were juvenile male.
The school’s security officers broke up the fight, which took place between class periods, he said.
Charges are pending an ongoing investigation, Guenther said.
A school representative could not be immediately reached for comment, but according to the statement, the fight stemmed from an incident “at a neighborhood event over the weekend.”
“All students involved have been removed from the school by the police and have been suspended,” the statement said. “The school will take disciplinary actions as warranted by district policies.”
School officials are referred requests for further information to the police.
Guenther said the fight did not involve gang activity, and that “it just stemmed from verbal altercations that had been escalating over a period of time that included today’s fight.”
A high school safety officer was injured in the arm while breaking up the fight. That person was treated and released by an area hospital, Guenther said. No other injuries were reported.
