Theater company eyes move to Evanston

Evanston’s theater community could be gaining a new member.

Richard Engling, artistic director at Chicago’s Polarity Ensemble Theatre, recently told members of the Howard Street Business Association that his company is considering a move to Howard Street.

“We’d like to do it,” Engling said. “We just need to figure out if it’s possible.”

The company now occupies a 54-seat theater space at Josephinum Academy in Chicago’s Wicker Park neighborhood. The downside of the location, according to Engling, is that patrons have a difficult time finding the theater because it’s on a residential street.

“I’m from Evanston,” Engling said. “Our chairman of the board of directors is from Evanston. Our contacts are here. We think we could attract more audience here and attract more people on to our board, or donors, if we were local here.”

One positive to its current location is that the company provides Josephinum Academy with a semester theater course in exchange for discounted rent.

If Polarity moves to Evanston, Engling said the company would continue its current programming — and even look to expand its repertoire.

“We would be thinking about doing some late-night shows,” he said. “We would also sublet to other companies to keep the space busy.”
